Texas achieved a historic energy milestone in June 2026, becoming the first US state to generate 100% of its electricity from renewable sources for an entire calendar month, according to data released by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. Wind turbines generated 58% of total electricity while solar farms contributed 31%.
Battery storage systems, which have tripled in capacity since 2024, balanced grid fluctuations during cloudy or low-wind periods, covering the remaining 11%. The achievement was especially notable given Texas's grid had been criticized for reliability following the deadly February 2021 winter storm.
New offshore wind projects in the Gulf of Mexico are expected to add another 8 GW by 2028. The state now has more installed wind capacity than the next three states combined, cementing its role as America's renewable energy leader.
